For five nights and six days you'll travel through East Arnhem Land, visiting amazing places like the Bawaka Homeland and Dhambaliya (Bremer Island), and enjoying cultural activities under the guidance of Yolngu leaders. You'll be welcomed with a traditional smoking ceremony Welcome to Country and general orientation to the homeland by the Yolngu people, who will lead you in cultural activities so you can learn about their traditional methods of living. That might include hands-on activities like crafting, painting or weaving, witnessing the traditional hunting and gathering techniques, and tasting foods like mud crabs and bush honey. At the end of each day, sit around the fire with the traditional owners to learn about their culture, listening to songs and stories of the land. You'll also visit the community of Yirrkala to see its world-famous art gallery - the Buku-Larrnggay Mulka Art Centre - featuring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artworks. Spend plenty of time exploring the spectacular natural landscapes of East Arnhem Land, including a trip to Dhambaliya (Bremer Island). A speedboat will take you there and you'll be staying in an eco-sensitive beach retreat, built in partnership with the Yolgnu people. Here you can watch the sun set over the ocean from the deck and enjoy views of the Arafura sea from the pool. There's plenty to do on the island, including the walking trails through the dunes and pristine beaches. You can even see turtles nesting if the time of year is right. This is an action-packed six day adventure that will give you an appreciation for the incredible landscapes and culture of East Arnhem Land. Your trip includes return transfers from Gove Airport.

Seasons

  • The Northern Territory cyclone season officially commences on 1 November and runs through until 30 April each year. East Arnhem Land experiences year-round high temperatures, with December to February often reaching over 35°C. Take precautions against the sun all year round, such as wearing a hat, sunglasses and long-sleeves, using sunscreen, staying hydrated and in the shade during the heat of the day

Hotel Pickup

  • You will be picked up from Gove Airport, and transported back at the end of your trip.

  • Luggage must be kept to a maximum of 15kg in a backpack or soft overnight bag
  • Bring a small day pack
  • It is prohibited to take alcohol on this trip as much of East Arnhem Land is alcohol-free

  • East Arnhem Land remains the same rugged wilderness that the Yolngu people’s ancestors walked, so some remote areas have only basic facilities and limited communication links to the outside world. The Yolngu people’s culture and history are incredibly important to them, and they want to share it with the outside world. To be part of this is a privilege and requires sensitivity and patience towards guides and staff
  • There is a minimum of 6 travellers per trip and a maximum of 12
  • Please note that the departure time from the island will be dependent on the flight schedule from Gove Airport. Normally you are likely to leave mid morning or around lunch time for Nhulunbuy. If you wish to stay longer on Bremer Island, please ensure you book additional nights well in advance.
