Excellent experience super friendly volunteers and staff.
Departs Strahan Wharf for Hells Gates, the narrow-channel entrance to Macquarie Harbour, named by the convicts on their way to “Hell on Earth.” Pass ocean trout and Atlantic salmon farms enroute to Sarah Island, an hour-long guided tour of the island conveys a keen appreciation of the harsh conditions at what was Tasmania's first and perhaps most notorious penal settlement. From Sarah Island travel into the majestic World Heritage listed Gordon River. Rediscover serenity while gliding deep into the ancient rainforest. Disembark at Heritage Landing for a stroll through the lichen-covered rainforest and one of its oldest inhabitants - a 2000-year-old Huon Pine.
The whole adventure is completed by engaging onboard commentary on the area's human history, ecology and geology, a commentary enriched with anecdotes from the Grining family’s own experiences from more than a century of cruising this famous river. A sumptuous lunch including local smoked salmon is included in your cruise fare. Fresh Tasmanian food is prepared daily and a selection of drinks and snacks are available at very reasonable prices throughout the cruise.
