What you can expect
The Classic Rattler Run takes you back in time to the heyday of the Mary Valley restored steam engine train. Leaving from the historic Gympie Station, you’ll travel in style as you pass through the picturesque sights of Queensland’s Mary Valley. Just sit back and enjoy the view.
Queensland’s Mary Valley railway line was of great significance to the Gympie community and the restored train journey is run by a not-for-profit organisation for the preservation of heritage rail in Queensland. So your train ticket is not only an exhilarating, memorable experience, it also goes towards keeping this important piece of history alive.

- The Historic Gympie Station, Tozer Street is a traditional Queensland building which has been fully restored to its former glory. Make sure you leave plenty of time to explore The Station which houses a historical display sharing stories of the Mary Valley Railway line and its people

- The gift shop stocks a variety of train-themed treasures and local specialty products.
- Step aboard one of our meticulously restored trains and travel along the tracks that have been brought back to life. Sit back, relax and enjoy the breathtaking scenery of the Mary Valley
- Your journey passes through the small town of Dagun, home to a beautiful heritage station
- Nestled in the centre of the Mary Valley, Amamoor is a historic town bordered by Amamoor State Forest and a Forest Reserve which is home to more than 120 species of birds. Here the train will turn around on the restored turntable. You can watch this fascinating process or explore the quaint community of Amamoor

- Steam Train departs Gympie at 9am on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays
- Please check in at least 45 minutes before departure
- Rusty Rails Cafe, located in the historic Gympie Station, is open from 8am to 3pm

- The Classic Rattler Train: Child age is 2-12yrs
- The Rattler Tasting Train: Infant age is 0-1yrs and do not occupy a seat. Paid tickets apply to guests aged 2yrs and over
- PLEASE NOTE: Sunday Service returns to the Gympie Station at 1.30pm (30 minutes later than Wednesday and Saturday service). This includes an additional station stop at Dagun where you can enjoy outdoor games and wine and cheese tasting (that can be purchased on the day at an additional cost).
Terms And Conditions
- Due to the heritage nature of the carriages, access to the carriages requires the ability to climb stairs and safely negotiate the gap between the platform and the carriage. Unfortunately, manual assistance to board the carriages is not available.
- Not accessible for high chairs or prams
- Mary Valley Rattler is a not-for-profit organisation for the preservation of heritage rail in Queensland
- Train journey is one hour one way, with one hour at Amamoor before return
- The operation of steam is subject to weather conditions, total fire ban, volunteer driver availability or situations out of the control of the Rattler Railway Company. At times there may be an operational necessity to change the scheduled engine
- At January 2020, The Mary Valley Rattler holds a current exemption from QFES allowing them to operate all services during total fire ban
